George Washington Herring and Hester Ann Kemp

George W. Herring was my great great gandfather. He was born in Albemarle Co. Virginia on July 10, 1823, and was 15 years old when the family came to Callway County Missouri. He was a son of John and Lucy Carver Herring. note: we share the same birthday... July 10

On March 9, 1843, George married Hester Ann Kemp. She was born Feb 28, 1824 in Franklin Virginia. Hester was a daughter of Walter Kemp and Jerusha Key.

Walter Kemp was born Oct. 27, 1785 in Bedford Co., Virginia, died Nov. 21, 1852 in Callaway Co., Missouri. He was a son of Thomas Cauper Kemp, a Revolutionary War veteran, and Esther Maxey, both born in Virginia. Jerusha Key was born Mar. 7, 1794 in Franklin Co., Virginia and died Aug. 20, 1840 in Callaway Co., Missouri. She was a daughter of George Key, a Revolutionary War veteran, born 1753 in Bedford Co., Virginia and Susannah Suckey Craghead, born Sept. 1764 in Franklin Co., Virginia, and died after 1840 in Callaway Co., Missouri. Walter Kemp and Jerusha Key were 1st cousins once removed.

There is a theory, and so far it is only a theory, that George is possibly the oldest son of George Washington Herring Sr. and his first wife Polly Carver, instead of John Herring and Lucy Carver. Until we can find a birth record to prove this, it is only speculation at this point. However, we do have a record of George giving his name as Jr., and if he was a son of John, he would not be a Jr. He also lived on property in Missouri next to George W. Herring Sr. The birth date is possible to have been a son of George W. Herring Sr. and his first wife, it is believed she died around 1823, possibly in childbirth. She was a sister of Lucy Carver so it is reasonable that John and Lucy Carver Herring would have taken the baby to raise. George W. Herring Sr. waited until this George W. Herring was an adult and married before he named another son George Washington Herring Jr. When we find absolute proof one way or another, we will post it here.
