John Dabney Herring and Permelia Jane Davis



John Dabney Herring was born in Callaway Co., Missouri in 1854. He was a son of George Washington Herring and Hester Ann Kemp. He was my great granduncle.

On March 17, 1880, in Callaway Co., Missouri, John married Permelia Jane Davis. She was born Dec. 28, 1848 in Missouri, a daughter of Eisha K. Davis and Nancy G. Carrington. She was a grandaughter of Randolph Carrington and Katharine McGary. She was my 1st cousin 3 times removed.

    • Married Jan 29, 1908, Callaway Co. Missouri, Rosene Lacerge Mosley, b: Jun. 1, 1884, Callaway Co., Missouri, d: Feb. 9, 1927, Hannibal, Ralls Co., Missouri. She was a daughter of Benjamin T. Mosley and Ellen Newsom. She is buried in Mt. Olivet cemetery, Hannibal, Ralls, Missouri.

                 Lucille Herring Baysinger, 89, of Jefferson City and formerly of Hannibal, died Jan. 17, 1998, at Callaway Community Hospital in Fulton.
                 Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Debo Funeral Home in Fulton. The Rev. Raymond McCallister will officiate. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery in Jefferson City.
                 Mrs. Baysinger was born Jan. 8, 1909, in Fulton to Letus and Rosene Mosley Herring.
                 She was married to Dwight Hammon. He preceded her in death. She was later married to Ollie Baysinger. He also preceded her in death.
                 Survivors include two sons; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; one brother, Paul Herring of Hannibal; and one sister, Pauline Smith of Jefferson City.
                 She was preceded in death by one brother, Marvin Herring.
                 Mrs. Baysinger was employed by the Division of Employment Security from 1937 to 1976 and had been secretary to the director for many years.
                 She lived in Hannibal and Fulton before moving to Jefferson City in 1953. She had lived at the Heisinger Lutheran Retirement Home for the past three years.
                 Mrs. Baysinger was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jefferson City. She also was a member of the Eastern Star in Jefferson City. She was a graduate of Hannibal High School. She enjoyed traveling.

        • Married Wilson Smith, b: Feb. 3, 1913, Callaway Co., Missouri, d: Apr. 4, 1994. He was a son of Ory Lemon Smith and Lucy Pearl Clatterbuck. He was my 4th cousin twice removed.

               Pauline Ellen Smith, 85, New Bloomfield, died Oct. 12, 2002, at Presbyterian Manor, Fulton.
               She was born Jan. 4, 1917, in Mexico, a daughter of Letus and Rose Mosley Herring. She was married in February 1939 in New Bloomfield, to Wilson Smith, who died April 4, 1994.
               She worked as a secretary for the Callaway Bank in Fulton. She was a member of Dry Fork Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher.
               She was a member of WMU, the Guthrie Extension Club and the Eastern Star.
               Survivors include: one son, one daughter, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
               Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Dry Fork Baptist Church, New Bloomfield. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
  3. Ovles W. Herring, b: Apr. 30, 1890, Callaway Co. Missouri, d: Apr. 1964, Missouri.
    • Married, June 1910, Mexico, Audrain Co., Misouri, May Auther, b: abt. 1888, Missouri.
    • In 1920, living in Hannibal Mo., he's a furniture salesman. Her father, Danial Arthur is living with this family.
      • Married:

In 1870, 1880, and 1900 John and Permelia Davis Herring were living in Callaway Co. Missouri. In 1910, their niece, Annie Buelah Herring age 14, daughter of William Henry Herring and Nevada Dorsey, was living with this family. On the 1920 census, they were living in Mexico, Audrain Co. Missouri. They both died in Hannibal, at the home of their son Ovles.

John Dabney Herring died April 4, 1931, Hannibal, Ralls, Missouri. Permelia Jane Davis Herring died Feb. 27, 1924 in Hannibal, Ralls Co., Missouri. They are buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Mexico, Audrain Co., Missouri.

Former Callawegian Died in Hannibal
     John D. Herring, 78 years old, a former resident of Callaway county, died at his home in Hannibal Saturday morning at 11:00 o'clock.
     A funeral service was held at Hannibal Monday morning at 10:00 o'clock and burial was in the cemetery at Mexico at 2:30 Monday afternoon.
     Mr. Herring was born in Callaway county December 19, 1854 and spent his early life here. He moved from Callaway county to Mexico and from there went to Hannibal where he had been living for a number of years. He was a son of George W. and Hester Herring. Three children survive: Mrs. Harvey McKinley, Letus Herring and O.M. Herring, all of Hannibal. His wife, formerly Miss Pamelia Davis, died several years ago. One sister, Mrs. Eliza Carrington, of Fulton, also is living. Mr. Herring united with the Christian church at an early age.

Note: John Dabney Herring's sister, Eliza Herring Carrington, was my great grandmother.
