Dunlap
At her home near Fulton, Callaway county Missouri, December 15th, 1877, Mrs. Sarah S. Dunlap, aged 68 years and 19 days.
The deceased was born in Greenup county, Ky., November 26th, 1809, emigrated to the eastern part of Callaway county, Mo., in 1818, and was married to Mr. James M. Dunlap, one of the highly esteemed pioneers of Callaway county on December 7, 1826. He died December 28, 1838, leaving eight dependent children (the eldest being only eleven years of age) and nothing but the farm as a support for his family. There the mother, just gone to her reward, reared the family by patient toll; and the mother's self-sacrifice, and devotion to her children through the weary years of struggle for them, were rewarded at length, when she saw her children occupying their places among the most respected of our citizens before she died.
She was a devoted member of the Christian church, having been baptized about 36 years ago by Elder Jacob Coons, and was faithful in attendance at public worship until ill health prevented. The bright example of her Christian life shone in her home and in her community upon the aged and young. She loved little children and many of them have grown up to call her blessed. Robert E. Bailey says he remembers "Aunt Sallie" from his earliest childhood as one of the kindest women he ever knew, beloved and respected by all. He and his companions who grew up under her influence know how to sympathize with her children in their loss of so good a mother. The writer was away from home and deeply regrets that he was not at the funeral. Bro. W.B. Whalthall conducted the burial serivces and the mortal remains were laid to rest beside her kindred in the Dunlap family graveyard.
