    Wilks Log House
The original Wilks log house, near Bachelor, Callaway Co., Missouri. The first 8 children of Rufus Wilks and Oddie Day were born in this house. It was two rooms with an upstairs loft. There were open steps going up one wall. The house was left in 1910 when the new house was built on the property. Rufus built the house, probably about 1892

M: James Rufus Wilks - they are buried in Auxvasse Cemetery.
The death certificate said she had chronic myocarditis & generalized arteriosclerosis & old cerebral hemorrhage.
She moved to Missouri @ age 4 after her mother died - she lived with S.P. Day's sister, Margaret Day Stringer, south of Auxvasse - most of the time. I have a picture of her and Charles Crooks and she is 4 or less. S.P. didn't marry Charles' mother, Margaret Crooks until 1890, which explains why Oddie lived with Aunt Mag so much, but I don't know why they did not marry for so long. Oddie and Charles Crooks were quite friendly. Charles was a Presbyterian Minister and Surgeon, doctor and missionary to Siam. He spent most of his time there, with his wife, Florence, retiring and dying in St. Augustine, FL. in 1949. When S.P. died, Mother always said there was a piece of property out around Odessa and Midland, Tx where her mother died. Oddie inherited it, but Rufus could not take care of it and did not want to pay taxes on it, so they sold it. There was a piece of property up around Kansas City, I think, too. Charles Crooks agreed to pay S.P. Day $50 or $100 per year as long as he lived, for the property. I think he was just generous. At any rate, when S.P. died in 1932 or '33, Oddie did not inform Charles right away. the check was due and the depression was on. Oddie did join the Six-Mile Methodist Church near Kansas City, KS @ 16 years, Wyandotte Co, KS. She went to high school for 2 years in Kansas City, KS, while she lived with her father. Have a picture of her at age 16, made at the same studio that the early picture was. Oddie married when she went back to live with Aunt Mag. After they married they lived for a few years in the Williamsburg community, MO, farming. My info said that they moved to the farm, then known as Callaway Post-Post Office where Mr. Wilks ran a general store and post office. In 1908 the post office was discontinued and a new house built on the site. They lived there many years, about 3 miles north of Hiway 40 (interstate 70). (Obit) They died in Grinnell, Iowa.

I don't remember too many specific interactions with Oddie. I always had the idea that she loved me, but she had so many grandchildren. I don't specifically remember a time when she used the expression, "reckon" but she did. I do remember my mother telling me that Oddie used it. I do too. I figured if it was good enough for Grandma, it was good enough for me. My grandson asked me if reckon was a real word. I said yes and told him about Grandma.
