Notes |
- John Gibbs sailed on the ship Supply from the Port of Weymouth, Dorsetshire, England in 1619 and landed at Jamestown, Virginia. He was listed as a partner with Christopher Safford on the Muster of Christopher Safford. He was commissioned a Lieutenant at Jordan's Journey in 1625, also listed as being at Jordan's Journey in 1623. He served as a Gentleman Justice at Charles Cittie County, Virginia in 1655.
The first representative assembly at Jamestown Va., convened on Friday July 30, 1619. John Gibbs is listed on the monument as Lieutenant John Gibbs, representative of Captaine Ward's Plantation. There is a possible family connection as a John Ward married an Amy Gibbs on June 27, 1566 in Aldenham, England.
John Gibbs survived the Indian massacre on the Virginia colonies in 1622. In 1632 there are records showing him trying to purchase the Berkeley plantation. On June 10, 1635, he was recorded as being at the plantation Flowedieu, and also that he traveled back to England in 1635. He was in Charles Cittie County again, serving as a Gentleman Justice of court from 1655 until 1658. He witnessed an agreement between two merchants on January 31, 1658.
He made several court appearances that were other than serving as Justice. An appearance was documented in 1655:
"Whereas Mr. John Gibbs complained against Ca;Jo ffrome for an iron chaine carried away from his ground by some of the sd Ca:ffromes people; it is therefor ordered the sd Ca;ffrome shall deliver and reneder the sd chaine to the sd Mr Gibbs and pay cost of the suit als Exec..."
"To prevent the many scurrilous reproachful and un-neighborly difference and Language between Mr.John Gibbs and Capt.John Ffrome the court doth order that either of them first raysing and causeing any more disturbances..."
Also in the Court Order Books are notices of John Gibbs' death and court dealings with his wife and others:
"Capt John Wall, Mr. David Jones, Mr. FFred Aston and Mr. Ffranceis Redford are required and appointed to aprise the estate of Mr. John Gibbs dec'd on the 10th this instant month." (January 10, 1659)
