      From the Cra(i)ghead book:
      John Craghead was one of the executors of his father's estate and fell heir to the home in which he was then living on Staunton River. He is said to have spent his entire life in the county of his birth, Franklin, Virginia. There, he first appears on the tax lists in 1795 and his first acreage is given as 341 A. on Staunton River. From 1809 to 1826 he is listed as owner of 550 A. of land.

      The Craghead home was one mile from Staunton (Roanoke) River, which separates Franklin from Bedford County. The house was built of brick made on the farm. The four wide walkways leading from the house are also of brick, and were lined with beautiful native boxwoods. John had several slaves.

      I just got back from going to see my parents in Roanoke, VA. and decided to see if I could locate the 1799 house of John Craghead. Found it 09/08/00. The house is still in great condition on the exterior as I could not see the inside for no one was there. Also found the cemetery off the property and found it to be in poor condition. Only two tombstones readable with dozens of broken and unreadable stones standing. The two that were readable were for Sallie "Powell" Craghead born Jan. 16 1776, Died Nov. 21, 1876, age 100 years and 10 months. The other which was on the ground and broken in two pieces was for John Craghead born Sept 25, 1771 Died Jan 24, 1859. The names on the tombstone have the last name spelled Craghead not Craighead.
