We know there were at least 11 children born. In 1881 when Amanda Knight Herring died, there were 7 children still living. The children who died young are burried in Herring 2 cemetery. Herring 2 is in very bad shape.
From the History of Callaway County Missouri, 1884, page 591
JOHN P. HERRING, an old citizen and worthy farmer of Caldwell township, was the second of a family of twelve children, ten sons and two daughters, of whom there are eight living, of John Herring, Sr., and wife, whose maiden name was Lucy Carver, both born and reared in Albemarle county, Virginia. John P., the subject of this sketch, was born in that county on the 22nd of March, 1821.
In 1838 the family removed to Missouri and settled in Callaway county, in that part of it now known as St. Aubert township, where the parents lived until their deaths. The father had been a gallant soldier in the War of 1812. John P. Herring was seventeen years of age when his parents came here in 1838, and had, therefore, been principally reared and educated in Virginia. Brought up a farmer, he has since followed that occupation and with satisfactory success.
On the 18th of June, 1846, he was married to Amanda J. Knight, a daughter of William L. and Celia Knight, of this county. She was born January 23, 1830. They have seven children living: James W., born October 4, 1854; Thomas C., born July 29, 1857; Eliza E., born December 31, 1859; Mary E., born March 23, 1862; Sallie P., born February 27, 1864, Celia A., born August 23, 1866, and Wilibia, born August 13, 1869. Five are deceased: an infant, Ann W., died October 2, 1850; William H., John W., died June 19, 1875, and Nancy J., died December 9, 1872.
Mr. Herring settled on his present farm in 1877, where he has since resided. His place contains about a quarter section of land and is well improved. He had a fine dwelling built in 1877, but this was destroyed by a cyclone on the 18th of April, 1880. He has rebuilt his dwelling, however, and has one of the neatest farm houses [sic] in the township. On the 19th of August, 1881, Mr. Herring had the misfortune to lose his wife by death. She was a noble-hearted, good woman, and her loss was sadly felt by all who knew her. Mr. Herring has long been a member of the Christian church.
His headstone is missing in New Bloomfield. His wife's headstone is there but is starting to fade away.
