John's family moved to Izard County, Arkansas prior to 1858.
John served in the Civil War. He enlisted in the 27th Arkansas Infantry, Company F, on May 21, 1862 at Locust Grove, Arkansas. His enlistment was for a period of one year. He gave his age as 22 on the enlistment form. John was medically discharged in August 1863.
John married Sarah Angeline M. Gilcrest. Sarah was born February 8, 1839, in Tennessee.
The 1880 Stone County, Arkansas census shows John and Sarah living in Sylamore Township. Living with them was Sarah's mother, Margaret Gilcrest, age 74, born in Virginia.
The 1920 Stone County census shows John, age 79, and Sarah, age 81, living in Sylamore Township.
