Benjamin Herring Probate Packet (0) This packet names the Benjamin's heirs as son John B Herring, daughter Nancy Crosthwaite, daughter Polly Tatum wife of Thomas Tatum, and Sarah Elizabeth Payne wife of William J Payne. The first three were with Benjamin in Callaway County. The Payne family was in Fluvenna County Virginia. The packet includes references to Charles Hill, who signed his name with an X. This could be the Charles Hill who is the father of Mariah Hill, wife of John B Herring, or it could be the Charles Hill (abt age 20) who later married Sarah Tatum, Benjamin's granddaughter. Since all of Benjamin Herring's children, and both of John B Herring's daughters were able to sign their own names, we think this Charles might well be Mariah (Hill) Herring's father. Since Mariah could sign her own name, we think it likely that the Hills of the current generation were literate, and that therefore both John B's father, and Mariah's father, came to Callaway County. Benjamin Herring was my great great great great grandfather. |

Notes |
- Benjamin's relationship to George Herring is based on what we know of the Herring marriages to the daughters of Henry Hill and Susanna Jones.and the handwritten note of Dolor Herring stating that John B. Herring was the cousin of George Washington Herring Sr.(son of George) All evidence points to Benjamin being the brother of George Herring.
