  • Notes
    • In the 1850 census for Callaway County, John Kemp is listed with his second wife Elizabeth Smith nee Woods, whom he had married in 1841. They are living next to John's son Dudley Kemp and three households from John's daughter Mary "Polly" Kemp Smith.

At the 1846 July Term of the Supreme Court of Missouri, a case concerning Elizabeth S. Smith Kemp nee Wood's slave named Sophia revealed that Elizabeth's first husband Samuel Smith died in Warren County, Missouri in 1840, that she was his second wife, they had no children, and her slave Sophia was received from the estate of her deceased father, name not given. Her marriage to Samuel Smith in 1828 occurred in Franklin County, Virginia, and shows her maiden name was Woods. John Kemp's marriage to Mrs. Elizabeth Smith nee Woods was recorded in Warren County, Missouri in 1841. Samuel Smith was the older brother of William H. Smith whose wife Mary "Polly" Kemp was the daughter of John Kemp and Fannie Dudley.

The inventory of John Kemp's estate listed a Negro woman named Sophia age 40. On August 14, 1856 in Callaway County, his widow Elizabeth S. Smith Kemp nee Woods married a third time to Michael Gilbert, Jr. who died shortly thereafter. By the 1860 census she was 70 years old and living with John Kemp's son Dudley Kemp in Callaway County under her former name of E. S. Kemp. In the 1860 slave census for Callaway County, Elizabeth S. Kemp is listed with a female slave age 45, a male slave age 18, and a female slave age 6. Samuel Smith's probate record in Warren County shows that his widow Elizabeth S. owned a Negro woman Sophia, a Negro boy Armstead, a Negro girl Francis, and a Negro boy James.

Elizabeth S. Smith Kemp Gilbert nee Woods died between August 1865, the date her will was written, and October 1865, the date her will was probated. Included in her probate file was a bill for William Kemp boarding her from October 19, 1864 to May 27, 1865, which was submitted by William Kemp's son Thomas G. Kemp. Also submitted on December 22, 1867 was a bill for services rendered to Elizabeth S. Gilbert by Sophia Kemp from January 1, to May 1, 1865 and witnessed by Thomas G. Kemp and Spencer Kemp. The black marriages for Callaway County reflect that Spencer Kemp had married Sophia Kemp on January 21, 1866.
