Notes |
- From A History of Callaway County book, 1884, which is not always accurate:
Joseph Smart, an energetic young farmer of Cote San Dessein township, and a son of James A. and Mary S. Glover Smart, was born in Callaway county on the 15th of November 1852. He was the fourth in a family of nine children, eight of whom are still living, as follows: John G., Bettie G., wife of John T. Hornbuckle; Joseph B. and Dewitt C., twin brothers; James S., Robert B., Mary S., and George L. Charles W. died in 1879 leaving a widow and five children. In 1828 the parents came to Callaway county from Kentucky, and settled on a farm here where the mother still lives. The father died on the 11th of March, 1879. He was a man respected by all who knew him, and his loss was deeply regretted. Mr. Joseph B. Smart was reared on his father's farm in this county where he still resides. He was charge of the homestead and conducts the farm with success and great energy. The place contains 272 acresm, most of which is either in cultivation or in pasturage. He raises from 100 to 120 acres of grain and also considerable stock. He handles mules and horses and has a flock of about forty head of fine Cotswold sheep, The father was long a member of the Christian church, and Mr. Joseph B. Smart and his mother are also members of that denomination.
