- J.W. SALING DEAD
John Wesley Saling, youngest of four children in the home of Burton and Sarah Ann (Snider) Saling, was born in Goodland, Knox County, Missouri, Mar. 5, 1860, and died at his home near Mokane, June 28, 1932, aged 72 years, 3 months and 25 days. His childhood was cast amid the scenes of difficulties of the Civil War, his father having served in the Union Army during almost the entire period of the War, and the section of the state in which they lived witnessed the surging back and forth of the two armies. Most of his early life was spent in eastern Macon County and for some time he followed the trade of a harness maker.
Mr. Saling was married Nov. 3, 1895 to Alice Rebecca Snow, and to this union were born five children, all of whom are living.
Early in life he professed faith in Christ and was a member of the Sue City Baptist Church. Both of his grandfathers were preachers, his grandfather Saling being connected with the Primitive Baptist and his grandfather Snider a missionary Baptist preacher of unusual ability and achievement in establishing churches in northeast Missouri, some of which are alive and active to this day.
John Saling in earlier years was a singer of recognized merit and his clear tenor voice and accurate reading made him the standard bearer in that section of all musical events. He was reared in an atmosphere of profound religious sincerity and to the end maintained his convictions and faith.
His mother died in 1892 and his sister, Nancy Streight in 1896, his father in 1907, his brother, Robert in 1915, his sister, Anne Clemmons in 1917, so that he is the last one of the family to gather in the restored circle at the throne of the Eternal.
He leaves, besides his widow, his children, Finis Saling, Mrs. Viola Ancell, Warner Saling, Cecil Saling and Mrs. Veta Boyd; three grandchildren, Viola Jewell, Alba Lorene and Donald Warner Saling; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held in the Mokane Christian Church with Rev. F.M. Branic of Shelbyville, a cousin of Mrs. Saling, preaching and his nephew, Dr. M.O. Clemmons of Clay Center, Kansas, reading the obituary. The music by the choir was especially fine. Burial was in the Mokane Cemetery.
