Mrs. Floe Wilson of New Bloomfield, Mo., gave the info on his death certificate.
From the 1984 Callaway county history book:
The family home was a 195 acre farm near Holts Summit, Missouri (Cedar Township). The father had purchased this farm some years before his marriage at age 33, but from 1883 until 1966, when the mother died, it was in operation.
Although farming was the principal occupation, John Lewis was very community minded and gave lots of his time to its betterment and progress. Starting in 1920, John Lewis assisted the State Highway Department in securing "free right-of-way" for U.S. Highway 54. This was first a dirt road, then gravel, and now the present concrete. Along with this he secured many jobs for neighbor men with the highway department. He served on the local school board; for many years he served as a member of the "Special Road District" which took care of road repair. He was often called on to make the rounds to collect money so the preacher could be paid. Holts Summit and the surrounding community had a local phone system so that neighbor could talk to neighbor, but the Kinlock Telephone Company came to the area and John Lewis was out soliciting people to subscribe to a phone system that could call "long distance." He was the first in the community to have a long distance phone. The Kinlock Company later sold out to Bell Telephone Company.
As a member of the County Court, John Lewis was known as an official who "was honest and a man who played fair." A more accurate phrase could not have been used to describe him. | John Lewis Adkison
