Strange Love of Woman Revealed in Death Note
Fulton, Mo., Nov. 10. - A strange love between two women which resulted in the tragic death of both, was revealed Tuesday with the finding of a note left by Miss Caroline Weant, a stenographer, who, according to latest evidence yesterday morning shot and killed Mrs. Ada McCowan, with whom she lived, and then killed herself.
The shooting occurred in the bedchamber which the women occupied together, Mason McCowan, the husband, sleeping in another part of the house.
All Fulton is stirred today by the tragic and unsuspect circumstances of a drama involving two of the most prominent and respected women in this city. Not only were Miss Weant and Mrs. McCowan well known in the social circles, but both were prominant members of the Christian Church. Their remarkable friendship, regarded generally as a sisterly affection, was the comment of the town.
Following testimony at the coroner's inquest that Miss Weant and Mrs. McCowan had quarreled because of jealosy over each other's women friends, a search of the effects of Miss Weant was made. Her brother, H.W. Weant of Jefferson City, found a note which definitely established, it was declared, that Miss Weant had done the shooting.
The first part of the note, written last Friday, the day when the two had a severe quarrel, read in part:
"I am doing this act because of trouble I have had with Ada and as there is nothing else that I have to live for after having confiding love and trust in her as the dearest friend nearst to God Himself, I am making an end of this life. I want the following wishes carried out if possible.
"I want all items sold and the money placed to the account of Wallace August Rogers, or given to his mother for his keep and care."
The second part of the note, written on Saturday, contained a list of clothing and personal belongings. The note was written on legal paper, leading to the belief that she wrote it in the law office where she was employed. The note was found in a suitcase which Miss Weant had started to pack preparatory to leaving the McCowan home. Mrs. Mary Addison (Acison), Mrs. McCowan's mother, having asked her to leave following the quarrel last Friday. | Ada Mary Acison
