- Herring - In this county, on March 1st. 1875, Churchie, infant son of Marcus T. and M.A. Herring, aged 2 months and 5 days.
Our dear little babe, beloved first-born, Has left us thus soon. It's absence to mourn, Our sweet charished hopes, in anticipation, Have all been wrecked by this sad visitation.
And now were it not for that light from above, That chastens the heart though strengthens the love. Our grief would be stayed, our fate would be hard, As those without hope or trust in the Lord.
But thanks be to God for the love and the light, That pierces the gloom, that dispels the night, and thus brings to view the city afar, Where death enters not; whose gates are ajar.
And now may those who sigh for the dead, Dispel all their gloom, their fear and their dread. For Christ has arisen in power and might, And brought life and immortality to light.
