Another old and prominent citizen of Audrain county has passed away, Alex. Carter, Sr. He died at 4 o'clock Thursday morning, October 28.
The funeral services will take place at the residence in this city at 1 o'clock Friday, October 24, and at 3 o'clock at Sunrise church, five miles north of Mexico. The services will be conducted by Rev. R.D. Chinn, of Vandalia.
Mr. Carter was born in Woodford county, Kentucky, and came to Missouri in the early fifties. Mr. Carter was married three times, first marrying Miss Martha Thomas, of Callaway county, Mo. Mrs. Frances Ricketts was his second wife, and Mrs. Edmonston his third. His last wife died about six months ago. Nine children were born to his first wife. One son, Braxton, and daughter, Mollie, are dead. The sons living are William, Robert, Frank, Alexander Jr., and Sterling. The daughters living are Mrs. Mason, of Columbia, and Mrs. Powell of Audrain.
Mr. Carter was one of the oldest and best citizens of Audrain county. He was a lineal descendent of Robert Carter, who was president of the council of Virginia in 1726 and owner of over 1,000 slaves and 30,000 acres of land.
Mr. Carter came to Missouri in about 1852 and has assisted materially in the building up of this part of Missouri. He was a farmer and stock raiser up to a few years ago when he moved from his farm, north of Mexico, to this city. He was a prominet member of the Christian church and was highly esteemed by a large circle of friends. The Intelligencer extends congratulations to the bereaved relatives.

Notes |
- On the 1844 Callaway Co., Missouri special census, Alexander Carter and family are listed. They are living next door to his brother John G. Carter family, and 4 houses away from Nathan Herring family. This would put them just west of Fulton.
I cannot find him on 1850, however, his wife Martha and their three oldest children are living with the George Thomas family in Callaway Co., Missouri that year. They are living next door to John and Lucy Carver Herring... Alexander was not there.
His obituary says he came to Missouri in 1852, this is not true, he came to Audrain county Missouri about that time, but he was in Callaway County about 10 years before that.

not everything in his obit from the Mexico paper is totally accurate.
Alexander Carter Sr. buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Mexico, Mo. (we have not found his headstone. He might have been buried at Sunrise cemetery, but there is no headstone for him there either, and the large newer headstone there for his wife and mother would surely list him if he was there. I saw him on an old listing of Elmwood, he has family there also. There are many Carter headstones missing in Elmwood.)
