      Nonagenarian Died Suddenly
Mrs. Jennie Craghead Passed Away at Home of Daughter, Mrs. A. G. Graves, Sunday.
Mrs. Virginia Jennie Craghead, 90 years old a native of Callaway County, died suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Albert Graves, of Bluff street, at 10:00 o'clock Sunday morning. Her death came unexpectedly as she had not been ill.. She had been active, both mentally and physically, until a week ago, when she suffered a fall and had been confined to her bed since that time.
A funeral service was conducted at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Ebenezer Baptist church, northeast of Fulton, by the Rev. S.S. Keith, and burial was in the cemetery at that church.
Mrs. Craghead's maiden name was Virginia Herring. (this is not correct, her name was Jane Frances Herring) She was a daughter of the late George Washington and Lucy Herring who came to Missouri from Virginia in 1835. She was born in November, 1838, three years after the arrival of her parents in Callaway County.
Mrs. Craghead was first married to John Congo (Conger) and to this union tow children were born. They are: Lee Congo (Conger) and Mrs. Matthew Wright, both living east of Fulton. Her first husband was killed at Kenesaw Mountain, Tenn., (it's in Georgia) in 1863 (June of 1864) while serving as a soldier of the Confederacy.
Mrs. Craghead was married a second time to Benjamin Suggett, who died in 1875 (1877). To this union, three children were born. They are: Benjamin Suggett Jr. of California, Mrs. S.P. Beaven of Kirksville, and O.B. Suggett of Fulton.
The last marriage of Mrs. Craghead was to Calvin C. Craghead who preceeded her in death by ten years. (fifteen years) To this union, two children were born. They are: Gertrude Craghead, who died in young womanhood (she died at age 5), and Mrs. A.G. Graves, with whom Mrs. Craghead has made her home the last few years.
Mrs. Craghead was a member of a family of twelve children, (I only have records of ten...) three of whom are left to mourn her passing, They are: George W. Herring, and Dabney W. Herring, both living south of Fulton, and Mrs. Mary Gannaway of St. Louis.

  • Notes
    • John Conger was the brother of Eliza Conger Herring. Eliza married James E. Herring, who was Jane Herring Conger's brother.

Jane and John had two children, Lee Conger, (born 1858 in Callaway County) and Florance Conger (born 1860 in Callaway County). Lee Conger died in 1945 and is buried in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery, Callaway Co., Missouri. I found a Estella Conger, age 17, living with her grandmother Jane in Audrain County on the 1900 census,

On December 22, 1864, Jane married Benjamin D. Suggett in Callaway County. Her name was listed as Francis Jane Conger.

Benjamin D. Suggett was born in 1811 in Kentucky. He was quite a bit older than Jane and already had several children by his first wife, Elizabeth F. Branham. Elizabeth was born in 1831 in Callaway County. They were married November 1, 1848. I do not have an exact date of death for Elizabeth Suggett, but it was between 1857 and 1863. They had 3 children, Napoleon (born 1850), Edwin (born 1855), and Sarah (born 1857)

Jane Francis Herring Conger Suggett Craighead is buried in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery, Callaway County Missouri, next to Cal Craighead. There is no date of death listed other than 19__. Cal Craighead died 15 Nov 1915

Her name was not Virginia. Her nickname was Jeannie, and it was assumed it was a nickname for Virginia. Her name was Jane Francis.
