Julia A. Herring was my great grandaunt, a daughter of George Washington Herring and Lucy Simco. She was born December 26, 1833 in Albemarle Co., Virginia. When she was two years old, her family made the journey to Callaway County Missouri. On January 31, 1856, Julia married my 2nd great granduncle, Albert Samuel Fletcher, in Callaway Co., Missouri. He was born about 1827 in Virginia. He was a son of John and Mary Fletcher, my 3rd great grandparents. In 1849, Albert got the gold rush fever and went to California. He was in Calaveras, California in 1850, occupation minor. He probably didn't stay very long, he was back in Missouri by 1855. Many young men from Callaway County went to California at this time, many of them came back home within a year or two. Albert and Julia had 7 children that I have found, I'm thinking there were probably more children born, probably not living to adulthood:
The youngest child on the 1880 census was born in 1878, but Julia was not listed on the 1880 census. I assume she died between 1878 and 1880. I have not found a cemetery record for her, nor a death record for her husband. This has been a very hard family to trace. Mr Fletcher has been found as both Albert and Samuel. Julia has been found as Judith. Their children have also been very hard to trace, I have not found many marriages, death notices, census records or burials. |
