John Luther Herring was my great granduncle, the fourth child and second son of George Washington and Lucy Simco Herring. John Luther Herring was born May 2, 1837 in Callaway County Missouri.

In 1860, John married Rebecca Skinner. She was born in 1842 in Ohio, a daughter of Ephram and Georgia Skinner. Her sister, Zelda Skinner married John's brother, William Harrison Herring.

John Luther Herring and Rebecca Skinner lived in Woodlawn Twp., Monroe Co., Missouri. They may have been married there as I have not found a record of their marriage in Callaway County. Several of Rebecca's extended family lived in Monroe County.

This family went by the name of Herron instead of Herring. Over the years I have found Herring spelled this way, but it was never used consistantly throughout someone's life. On John's death certificate, his name is spelled Herron, and the name of his father is also spelled Herron instead of Herring. His mother's name on his death certificate is spelled Simco. By the time John died in 1922, the Simco family was spelling their name Simcoe, not Simco. I have to wonder if this family had completely broken off contact with their Callaway County family.
