Gideon Herring was a son of John and Lucy Carver Herring. He was born May 25, 1831 in Albemarle Co. Virginia. He had 9 brothers and 2 sisters. He was my 2nd great granduncle.
Gideon came from Albemarle Virginia with his family when he was 7 years old. He grew up on a farm, and was himself a farmer all his life.
On August 26, 1857 he married Lucy Jane Simco. Lucy was a daughter of Reuben Brooks Simco and Sarah Cowherd Hill. Lucy's sister, Mary Francis Simco married Gideon's brother, Dabney.
Lucy Jane Simco was born Dec. 15, 1838 in Callaway County Missouri. She was my 1st cousin 3 times removed.
There is a discrepancy regarding Lucy's date and place of birth. The newspaper obit gives 15 Dec 1838, but this may be a transcription error or a typo by the person who transcribed the newspaper file. If this is correct, she was born within 3 months after the family came to Callaway Co., Missouri from Albemarle Co., Virginia. The date on her headstone is 15 Nov 1837. This would mean she was born in Albemarle Co., Virginia and came to Missouri when she was about 1 year old. The census records show her born in Missouri. Death certificate says 15 Nov 1837. Info on death certificate was given by her sister Susan Simco LaRue.

In this county of Typhoid Pueumonia, on Sunday the 11th at 7 o'clock and 10 minutes in the P,M,, William Henry, son of Gideon C. and Lucy J Herring, aged 15 years, 10 months and 20 days.
Thus in the early spring-time of life has departed a bright and most interesting child. During his illness he often expressed his desire to go home. While bending over his lifeless form, we noticed his face wore a bright beaming smile, which led us to believe he had reached his home - that house not made with hand eternal, and in the heavens.
We deeply sympathize with the distressed parents, and brothers and sisters in their sore bereavement. Willie has left us, but we trust that he now walks in the sunshine of his Savior's presence and love, and numbers one of that inaniperalite(?) company that have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the lamb.

Death of G.C. Herring
Gideon C. Herring, an old resident of Callaway county, died at his hom on the Jefferson City road, about three-quarters of a mile southwest of Fulton, Saturday morning at 2:00 o'clock. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at Mt. Carmel church and was conducted by the Rev. C.K. Gillum, paster of the Central Christian church, of which Mr. Herring was a member. A very large crowd was present, and the church was too small to hold half the audience.
Mr. Herring was born in Virginia on May 25, 1831, and came with his parents to Callaway county when a small child. The family settled on a farm about five miles southwest of Fulton, where Mr. Herring lived until about nine years ago, when he bought the place where he died.
He was married fifty-seven years ago to Miss Lucy Jane Simcoe, of Callaway county, who, with a son, Benjamin Herring, and a daughter, Mrs. Ibra Snook, survive him. A brother, Thomas Herring, also survives, and lives at Pitcher, this county. The daughter lives in LaGrande, Ore.
About a year ago Mr. Herring had a stroke of paralysis and a decline followed.
